What is Nutri-Score?
Nutri-Score is a 5-color nutritional front-of-pack label ranging from dark green (A) to dark red (E). It translates the nutritional density of a food into a simple, standardized metric per 100g or 100ml.
The algorithm was officially updated by the Scientific Committee of seven European nations to align more strictly with modern dietary guidelines.
The Point Formula: N Points vs P Points
Nutri-Score calculates a total score by subtracting Positive Nutritional Points (P) from Negative Nutritional Points (N):
Final Score = Total Negative Points (N) - Total Positive Points (P)
- Negative Points (N, up to 55 points): Energy density (kJ), Saturated Fatty Acids (g), Total Sugars (g), and Sodium (mg).
- Positive Points (P, up to 17 points): Dietary fiber (g), Protein (g), and percentage of Fruits, Vegetables, Legumes, and Nuts (% content).
- The Lower the Total Score, the Better the Grade: Lower scores achieve Grade A (best), while high scores drop to Grade E.
If a solid food product scores 11 or more negative points, protein points are ignored unless the product contains more than 80% fruits/vegetables/legumes.
What Changed in the Updated 2024/2025 Algorithm?
The updated system cracked down on loophole formulations: plant-based milks and diet sodas with non-sugar artificial sweeteners now receive negative points to prevent misrepresenting diet drinks as healthy water substitutes.
Fatty fish (like salmon and sardines) rich in Omega-3 now receive fairer recognition, while heavily sweetened whole-grain cereals were downgraded from A/B down to C/D.
