Camera & Photo Access: We request camera access strictly to scan barcodes and photograph ingredient labels (for un-barcoded foods like bakery items, deli goods, and bulk bins). We only capture photos when you explicitly tap the scan or upload button. Physical photos are processed ephemerally and never stored with personal identity.
Zero-Login Local Storage ("My Clean Pantry" & History): Your personalized sensitivity toggles (e.g. No Seed Oils, No Artificial Dyes), recent scan history (up to 50 items), and saved "Clean Pantry" favorites are stored 100% locally on your device (
localStorage). We do not require accounts, logins, or store your dietary profiles on central servers.Product & Ingredient Data: We collect barcodes and textual ingredient lists extracted from food packaging to calculate health scores, allergens, and ultra-processing metrics.
Usage Analytics: We collect anonymous, aggregated technical metrics on feature performance to identify crashes, latency, and optimize our platform.
2. How We Use It
Real-Time Health Synthesis: We process product ingredients instantly to compute Nutri-Score, NOVA Group 1–4, controversial food additives, and seed oil warnings.
Direct OCR Text Extraction: When scanning packaging without barcodes, our Vision AI transcribes the physical ingredient list to evaluate dietary safety on the fly.
Open-Source Community Donation: Packaging images of public consumer goods may be anonymously contributed to Open Food Facts to help build a transparent global food database.
Service Reliability: Anonymous error reports help us improve camera barcode recognition and OCR accuracy across diverse devices.
3. Third-Party Services & Disclosures
We rely on trusted, privacy-aligned infrastructure to power our food intelligence engine:
We query their open database for food composition, allergens, and Eco-Score metrics, and optionally submit anonymous packaging photographs to enrich public food transparency.
For un-barcoded foods or missing catalog items, packaging photos are processed through secure multi-modal AI APIs (Gemini 3.5 Flash, Cloudflare Workers AI, OpenRouter) strictly for optical character recognition. Photos are processed ephemerally and not used for facial recognition or personal tracking.
UnwrapTruth participates in affiliate advertising programs (including the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program). When users click on verified clean food swaps, we may earn an affiliate referral commission at no additional cost to you, which funds our independent research.
We never sell, rent, or monetize your individual search queries or scanning history to advertisers or third-party data brokers. Your pantry favorites stay on your phone.
4. Security
We implement robust security measures to protect your data. We do not store personal photos, biometric data, or any imagery not directly related to food packaging. AI processing is ephemeral.
5. Children
Our service is not directed to individuals under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children and will delete any such data if discovered.
